I'm a fairly happy-go-lucky sort, never one to hold a grudge, easy to please... but one of the things I hate most in this world is the lack of standards between Fortran compilers. I know, I know, that's such a tiny thing to be bothered by. It's just, every time I switch server, I have to relearn at least one or two fundamental building blocks of the language I use. It's like taking the time to learn French in France, and then coming to Quebec, and being told that you can't speak French. A situation that would be laughable, if it didn't happen on a regular basis.*
With French it's mostly the accent and also, I think, swear words. With Fortran it's always, -ALWAYS-, something to do with read statements. I mean, seriously, if you can read and make sense of read(unit=x, fmt=y) file.dat why the hell do you need to throw a wobbly at read(unit=x, y), file.dat when the only two options to read are unit, and format?? It's like being overly bothered by 'Je suis', even though you know that when you say 'chui', it's what you mean.
Admittedly, this analogy is poorly thought through, and badly executed, but I may well be quite cranky due to insomnia. And gfortran. Consider this a Government Health Warning.
Come back f90, all is forgiven.
update: now that I've got my code working, holy shit is Odin (our new server) fast. What took an hour or two on the old box is now literally done in a blink. Wow.
*not to me, just to folks I know of.

Such a very, very, very bad idea.
